Tutorial 1: Applications of Self-organizing Social/Overlay Network in Widearea Collaborative Environments

Speaker: Murat Kantarcioglu
Date/Time: Nov. 11th, 1:30pm - 4:30pm (coffee break at 3:00pm - 3:30pm)

Abstract

On-line social networks (OSNs) are platforms that allow people to publish details about themselves and to connect to other members of the network through friendship links. The existence of OSNs that include person-specific information creates both interesting opportunities and challenges.

For example, social network data could be used for suspicious event detection. At the same time, security and privacy concerns can prevent such efforts in practice. This tutorial will address the security and privacy issues in online social networks and discuss how to use social network data without sacrificing privacy and security.

Topics covered will include:

  • Efficient access control techniques for online social networks
  • Sanitizing online social network data for data analysis
  • Attribute, link and identity disclosure issues related to online networks

Tutorial 2: Semantic Enterprise 2.0 - Enabling Semantic Web technologies in Enterprise 2.0 Environment

Speaker: Alexandre Passant
Date/Time: Nov. 11th, 3:30pm - 6:00pm

Abstract

The Enterprise 2.0 term (coined by Andrew P. McAfee in 2006) gained in interest during the last few years: Web 2.0 tools like blogs, wikis, RSS feeds as well as microblogging are now used in companies to facilitate knowledge sharing between employees. However, typical Web 2.0 tools do not satisfy the needs of knowledge workers. For instance, valuable information contained in wikis is generally difficult to reuse in an autonomous way. Online Social Networks are rarely integrated into the existing IT landscape, although they could help with information dissemination and assessment. Moreover, incompatible data structures between applications make interoperability a difficult task. The Semantic Web helps to lead Web 2.0 for Enterprises it’s full potential by providing means to interlink and re-use knowledge created by end-users from various tools, and thus solve the previously mentioned issues.

In this tutorial, attendees will learn how to: (1) create a Semantic Web architecture for an existing Enterprise 2.0 infrastructure; (2) reuse knowledge hidden in existing applications like blogs, wikis and Online Social Networks; (3) integrate an existing company information IT infrastructure with the emerging Enterprise 2.0 toolset; (4) Manage domain ontologies in an open and collaborative way using semantic wikis; (5) take advantage of existing machine-accessible knowledge from the Web to augment user-experience in corporate applications and (6) bene?t of the architecture to provide semantic search capabilities.
